A lot of people have been asking me about this term because we use it a lot on the Stephanie Miller show. I coined the term a few years ago because I thought Straight Ally just sounded to clinical and I wanted something positive and amusing to describe my position vis a vis theGLBT community. It’s of course a reference to “Beverly Hills Adjacent”. Most apartment ads in LA try to make a cheap POS 1 bedroom worth $1800 a month by saying it’s BH adjacent..even when they are 30 miles away in Ventura county…… So that’s where it comes from. I’m not bi nor do I play around with my sexual identity for the amusement of others. It’s my way of saying to the LGBT community.. You’re great… I’m a friend.. end of story

Finally… there is a term that accurately describes me. Hal, I’m pretty sure you’re like me and get incorrectly called “gay” all the time!
Hal, I am gay, so Queer As Folk to me is wish fulfilment. For gay people, the series and its main characters will remain treasured icons. What starts out as a light-hearted soap soon becomes a ‘sentimental education’ for a gay person. There is plenty of self-irony and humor. Rather than cancelling out words or actions, this puts things into perspective and gets across the tone how gay people talk – which is mostly a means to survive in a hostile universe. Many thanks to you for “having found a heart” for the Mikey character, he really comes alive. Every time, I am moved by the beauty and the tenderness, stunned by the intimacy of those hugs I have never seen anywhere before, by the expressiveness of your face and by your adorable body. Being straight, you are an amazing man. I do not make the mistake of thinking you and Michael are the same person. If some people do, it is both wishful thinking and proof that you played the role convincingly. You ARE a great guy and great fun. Who would not like to have you around? I like to watch you on Ustream on the Stephanie Miller Show. I am delighted to hear to what extent our opinions match. Rome was not built in one day. There is no shortcut for a complex process, most things take time and a long-time effort. You are a true ambassador of a modern U.S. I would vote for you any time.
